OWNERSHIP RULE #6 of 14: “Failures Are Fine As Long As They Strengthen The Company.”

Nelson Mandela once said, “I never lose. I either win, or I learn.”

As a 29-year owner in the landscaping industry, I’ve witnessed my fair share of ups and downs. From botched projects, wrong hires, lack of systems, and poor culture to missed opportunities, my fault, their fault, our fault, the failures have been part and parcel of the journey. But over the years, I’ve come to understand that failures are not the end of the road; they are, in fact, the building blocks to a stronger and more resilient landscaping company.

First and foremost, failures provide invaluable learning experiences. They reveal the areas where improvement is needed, whether in project planning, customer communication, onboarding, leadership development, and many other things that come with growth, both personal and business-related. Each failure becomes an opportunity to evaluate what went wrong and why, allowing you to implement necessary changes to prevent the same mistakes in the future. The ability to adapt and learn from setbacks is crucial for long-term success and everyone’s well-being.

Furthermore, failures foster innovation and creativity. When something doesn’t go according to plan, a healthy use of the bad experience should lead to brainstorming and creativity to find alternative solutions. Approaching failures with this mindset can set your landscaping company apart from the competition, opening new avenues for growth and diversification.

Failures can also strengthen your team. They test your employees’ resilience, problem-solving skills, and teamwork. When everyone pulls together to overcome a setback, it builds camaraderie and trust within your team, ultimately making your company more cohesive and efficient.

Additionally, failures can be a reality check that keeps your company humble and hungry. Complacency can be a silent killer in any business. When you face failures, it reminds you that success is not guaranteed and that continuous effort and improvement are necessary to thrive in the competitive landscaping industry.

I’ll conclude by saying that failures are not something you should spend your time worrying about. They are stepping stones toward a stronger and more successful landscaping company. By viewing failures as opportunities for growth, learning, and innovation, you can build a company that not only survives but thrives in the face of adversity. Focus your energy and use it to become the fuel that propels your landscaping business to new heights, and always remember, You Never Lose. You Either Win, or you Learn.
